Water for Elephants in on the verge of reaching 70M worldwide at the box office! According to
 Box Office Mojo Water for Elephants has made 48.5M domestically and 21.3M Internationally.

Although the actuals are not out for a few days, The Hollywood Reporter posted to its site that Water For Elephants is currently ranked #5 in the Foreign Box Office and opened at #1 in Australia! 

"Fifth was Fox’s Water For Elephants, which opened in eight markets including a No. 1 in Australia bow ($3.8 million from 392 sites).  Overall weekend action generated $9.1 million from 3,897 locations in 52 territories. Cume for the Depression-era drama costarring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson totals $34 million."

It is still in the Top Ten here in the U.S. coming in at #8 this weekend. Estimates have it's Domestic total at $48,476,000 with an estimated Worldwide total of $69,776,000. Thanks to all the fans who have gone out to support Rob and this amazing film!

Box office numbers are in for Thursday, August 19 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has now officially surpassed the domestic total of New Moon. The film took in another $190,143 from 1,212 locations for a per theater average of $157 representing a decrease of 0.7% from Wednesday. This adds up to a cumulative domestic total of $296,649,934 after 51 days in release. Adding in overseas returns of $380.6M gives Eclipse a current worldwide total of $677,249,934.

For those comparing the films in The Twilight Saga, at this point in its release history (after 51 days) New Moon had taken in $290,277,863.

Eclipse is now at $296,649,934. Both films hit the $250M mark on the 16th day. The total domestic gross for New Moon was $296,623,634 (after 132 days). Eclipse has now broken that total by $26,600 (after 51 days). The film is now within striking distance of the elusive $300M mark. It needs about $3.35M to get to that number. It took New Moon 21 more days to earn an additional $3.35M after its 51st day, and Eclipse is clearly doing better. On the other hand, New Moon was still in 1,167 theaters after 51 days while Eclipse drops to 557 tomorrow. Still, even after New Moon’s theater count had dropped to 444 (after 63 days) it still went on to take in another $3.8M. Therefore, it should take no more than one more month for Eclipse to earn another $3.35M and pass $300M.

The U.S. isn’t the only place where The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has been setting records. According to Business Financial News, the United Kingdom’s Twilight series distributor Entertainment One (E1 Entertainment) reported a record-breaking 13.8 million pound intake from is July 9th release.

“It said ‘Eclipse’ exceeded the opening of its predecessor, ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’, which achieved £11.7m.”

The site also reports that Canada’s Eclipse sales put it among the top films of the year’s box office already. (Note: Canada released Eclipse on June 30th, like the U.S.)

This adds to the records which Eclipse has set in the U.S. of biggest Wednesday opening, midnight release, and number of theaters for the debut.

International and domestic sales have put Eclipse near the half billion mark already, less than two weeks after its release.

While “The Twilight Saga” is undoubtedly beloved its fans, it’s hard to argue that the fanbase will be able to turn it into one of the highest grossing film franchises out there. Sure, Summit said that “Eclipse” got more guys to the cinemas than the previous two films, but we doubt that is going to translate into higher box office revenue for the two “Breaking Dawn” films.

But even though “The Twilight Saga” isn’t the highest grossing film series, TheWrap argues that it is the most financially successful. How can “Twilight” be more successful than “Harry Potter,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” or “The Lord of the Rings,” you might ask? Because they’re so dirt cheap to make.

“Twilight” only cost $37 million to make, back when Summit thought they were backing a small indie film adaptation. The film went on to gross more than $392.5 million worldwide, which meant Summit was willing to give filmmaker Chris Weitz a slightly larger budget to film “New Moon.”

But still, “New Moon,” with all its CGI and gorgeous aerial shots, only cost $50 million to make, and grossed over $709.7 million worldwide. And even though “Eclipse” cost $68 million to make, it earned that back in its opening day, and has grossed more than $275 million in six days.
Compared to that, TheWrap reports that the first film in each of the “LotR,” “Pirates” and “Harry Potter” films cost around $100 million to make ($93 million, $140 million and $125 million respectively), with costs increasing on each of the films to an impressive $300 million for “At World’s End,” which barely made that money back in domestic release, and “Half-Blood Prince,” which cost $250 million to make and earned back just under a billion worldwide.

And even though the two “Breaking Dawn” films are going to cost about $100 million a piece, at the rate the “Twilight” films are making money, they’re still going to make probably seven or eight times as much as they cost to produce. Experts doubt that “Eclipse” will likely beat out “New Moon” by much in the box office, but even so, Summit will have made more than $600 million in box office profits.

TheWrap also references the way “Twilight” has almost single-handedly saved clothing store Hot Topic as well as revived the soundtrack industry. They even mention MTV’s old “Twilight Tuesdays,” which were used to promote “Twilight” back in 2008 by releasing fresh content every Tuesday leading up until the film’s release.

So haters can keep on hating, but “The Twilight Saga” will likely go down in history as the smartest move a film production company ever took, and many other ones will try to emulate its success for years to come.

Early estimates as of Friday 12:00 noon show The Twilight Saga: Eclipse finished #1 again on Thursday, taking in another $24.2M from 4,416 locations. Adding in Wednesday’s numbers gives the film a cumulative total of $92.8M domestic. Industry projections call for a possible 5-day weekend total of $110M and a 6-day holiday weekend totaling $178M. Spider-Man 2 took in $180M over its 6-day Independence Day holiday weekend.

How does this compare with recordholder New Moon? That film took in $72.7M its opening day and dropped 41.8% to earn $42.3M the next. Its total was $115M after the first two days. But, again, that was a Friday-Saturday as opposed to a Wednesday-Thursday. Apples to oranges, as the saying goes. That said, a drop from Wednesday to Thursday for Eclipse from $68.53M to $24.2M would be a pretty steep 65%. But that was to be expected since Thursday is still not part of the weekend.

The newest numbers have Eclipse putting up a $68.5 million total on its first day, breaking the Wednesday opening record of $62 million set by Transformers 2.

The film also had the biggest summer period opening ever, beating Dark Knight ($67.2 million).

It was a total Eclipse from the start.

The blockbuster third installment of The Twilight Saga opened to more than $30 million on its first night in North America.

It surpasses the previous midnight opening record holder, which was the second Twilight installment, New Moon, at $26.3 million.

It’s too early to know whether Eclipse will top New Moon’s (full) first day record of $72.7 million.

The movie also set a new IMAX record for midnight grosses with over $1 million from 192 theaters, beating Transformers 2’s $959,000.

Summit's "Eclipse" scored massive figures Tuesday night, with more than $30 million at some 4,000 engagements, enough to become the all-time highest-grossing pic for midnight runs.
The franchise's third outing, which surpassed "Twilight" predecessor "New Moon" ($26.3 million) for the late-night crown, will expand to 4,416 U.S. locations today. Large-screen exhib Imax posted north of $1 million from 192 engagements, a record-setting take for the company.

Some 12 territories, including Brazil and Mexico, also screened "Eclipse" during midnight showings. Most markets will continue the film's international rollout today, with additional bows July 1. Pic will launch day-and-date in 42 overseas markets.

Pic's midnight take reps a sizeable start Stateside over the Fourth of July weekend as its core aud of young femmes mostly are on summer vacation. "Eclipse" will go against the frame's other wide release Paramount's "The Last Airbender," which is expected to best serve males aged 25 and under.
