So the word is that just like the NFL, the NBA is also going to go through a lockout this year where there will be no games, no practice and no nothing that deals with the NBA during this time period. I really do not think that this "Lockout" will actually happen.
"The National Basketball Association under went the fourth work stoppage in league history, as the owners decided to lockout the National Basketball Players Association after talks to reach a new collective bargaining agreement failed.
Talks broke down after the two sides remained far apart on a new salary cap, total salaries, and revenue sharing. Despite the league experiencing its biggest success since 1998, its owners did not feel the success, claiming to have lost at least $300M this past season, and only eight of the 30 NBA teams were said to have made a profit this season.
Now with the NBA joining the NFL, and while the NFL is hoping to move towards a resolution, and have instituted that team members are to have no contact with the players, the NBA, has instituted the same rules, but with even harsher penalties and consequences:
- No contact from team staff or members is to be made during this period of stoppage. If the teams do not comply with this order, they will be fined $1M.
- No references to players are to be made on team websites. Some teams still have the rosters displayed, but all references and videos of players have been removed.
While the owners want to change the whole structure of the system in regards to the salary cap, more in particular instituting a hard cap or flex cap that players feel is close to a hard cap, which was instituted by the NHL after the whole 2004-05 season was wiped out due to the lockout, and the players caved into the owners demands of a hard salary cap. The owners want to relieve spending so teams do not go over the cap, as opposed to the current salary cap where teams went well over the cap to contend for championships."( http://technorati.com/sports/article/nba-lockout-what-happens-next/#ixzz1Rfzkv7Mx)
Do you guys feel this will happen?
